Skype is coming for Intel MIDs! They expect Skype software to work on Intel MIDs in a few months. VoIP over a tiny Linux based mobile Internet device. What could be sweeter?
Skype said that “MID users will be able to make Skype voice and video calls, while harnessing the PC-like performance of Intel’s new ultra mobile platform.” So the MID OEMs that are smart enough to include WiFi, WiMAX and USB / PC Card support for CDMA cards will be able to offer customers the use of mobile Skype.
How can you beat free calls to other Skype users and pretty cheap calls to regular phones…with a “pocketable” mobile Internet device? Skype is working direclty with Intel, so it sounds like every new Intel MID could have Skype pre-installed. As Skype says, this would give users a “rich Internet communications experience” - and mobile to boot.
If you are interested in the software and operating systems being developed for Intel Mobile Internet Devices, one of your first stops should be Moblin.org.
Moblin.org hosts the Mobile & Internet Linux* Project which is an umbrella, open source project focused on the development of Linux for Intel-based devices. To this purpose, moblin.org will host various projects that will provide key elements of community-based projects, such as Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded Edition*, Red Flag Midinux*, and Pepper Linux*, targeted for such devices. We also intend to be an incubator for prototyping new ideas and projects targeting these types of devices, such as the Intel-based Mobile Internet Device (MID) and various consumer electronic devices.
Developers are currently working on the Moblin Image Creator, Kernel, UI Framework, Power Management, Network Profile Manager, Browser, Multimedia, Camera, Chat and other Moblin MIDs Projects. Check it out.
